The journey of fashion between the 20th and 21 century has been an evolutionary relationship between handmade fashion and machine made fashion. If you are travelling to New York or the East Coast for a Spring holiday we recommend that you quench the thirst for art and fashion at The MET on 5th avenue. The Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s Costume Institute will explore how fashion designers are reconciling the handmade and the machine-made in the creation of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear. The exhibition will explore over 150 ensembles dating back to the past century to the present from the foundation years of the haute couture in the 19th century, when the sewing machine was invented, and the emergence of a distinction between the hand (manus) and the machine (machina) at the onset of mass production. The Robert Lehman Wing galleries on the Museum’s first floor and the ground level will present a series of case studies to unravel the hand/machine conundrum. Watch the video below to explore further of this initiative. Revisit the red carpet moments at The MET Gala 2016.
